Comprehensive Management of Thyroid and Parathyroid Diseases

General Information

Purpose:
This course will offer the latest information on the medical and surgical management of thyroid and parathyroid diseases, emphasizing minimally invasive surgical concepts through didactic lectures, panel discussions, surgical video presentations, hands-on skill stations, and cadaveric prosections demonstrating advanced surgical techniques.

Target Audience:
This course is designed for practicing otolaryngologists, head and neck surgeons, endocrine surgeons and endocrinologists interested in state-of-the-art medical and surgical management of thyroid and parathyroid disorders.

Objectives:
This course should enable participants to:
  • Use ultrasound, sestamibi scans, and other advanced imaging modalities to diagnose thyroid and parathyroid disorders
  • Describe a treatment algorithm for a thyroid nodule
  • Review the medical management of thyroid and parathyroid dysfunction and indications for surgical intervention
  • Describe the preoperative medical preparation and management of postoperative complications in patients with thyroid and parathyroid disease
  • Review surgical approaches to the thyroid compartment
  • Relate the value and limitations of laryngeal nerve monitoring
  • Master minimally invasive techniques for approaching the thyroid compartment
  • Use minimally invasive techniques for approaching the parathyroid glands
  • Review the management of thyroid cancer, including indications for neck dissection and adjuvant therapy
  • Review remote access thyroidectomy techniques utilizing robotic technology
  • Describe an algorithm for safe outpatient thyroid surgery
Hands-On Skill Labs / Cadaver Prosection:
Participants registering for this portion of the course will enjoy a hands-on experience performing ultrasound examinations of the neck and thyroid, proctored by faculty experts, along with an in-depth interactive session on recurrent laryngeal nerve monitoring using laryngeal models.

Registration for this portion of the course also includes observation of cadaver prosections demonstrating minimally invasive video-assisted thyroidectomy and remote access facelift thyroidectomy techniques.
